. both the president and mitt romney campaigning in swing states today, looking for the last-minute undecided voters. here's the latest from molly henenburg. >> companies hired more workers in october than at any time the last eight months. >> he has higher unemployment today than when he took office. >> reporter: one jobs report, two different interpretations. the labor department said the economy added 171,000 new jobs in the month of october. the rate of growth was not enough to keep the overall unemployment rate by rising by a .1 of a percentage point to 7.9%. >> the situation's not changeed or improved at all and is discouraging. >> reporter: even so, economic advisors say compared to the overwhelming job loss occurring when the president first took office, any growth is a sign the economy is recovering. >> over the last year, we have added 2.1 million jobs. the last 32 months, 5.4 million jobs. >> reporter: speaking to a crowd in ohio, governor mitt romney seized on the uptick of the overall numbers as a sign that a change is needed in washington. >> accomplishing chang
